Centuries before captain james cook set foot in hawaii in 1778, polynesian voyagers arrived in the islands on double-hulled voyaging canoes. Just prior to officially uniting the hawaiian islands as a single kingdom, king kamehameha named lahaina as the capital of hawaii in 1802. Lahaina’s rich history is deeply rooted in the 50 years it served as the epicenter of the hawaiian government. By the early 1800’s protestant missionaries from europe began to settle in lahaina.
These settlers opened up the floodgates for other european expeditions. This
time
of enormous cultural change lingers today in the colonial architecture of wooden buildings that line front street with proud dates of origin.
Lahaina is a town on the western end of the island of maui , hawaii that abounds with restaurants, night clubs, and souvenir shops. Because the western end of maui is a popular vacation destination, tourism is important to lahaina. Most tourists, however, eschew lahaina during the day, choosing instead the beaches of kaanapali; but

Halloween- yes, you read that right. Halloween is perhaps the most celebrated holiday on maui, and lahaina closes front street and hosts anywhere from 20,000-30,000 people at this spooky celebration dubbed the ‘mardi gras of the pacific’. The celebration begins with a costume parade followed by the mardi gras-esque party. If you’d rather not join the parade, pull up a seat at a waterfront bar and vote for your favorite costumes by throwing some beads. By land, by sea, or by zipline, this bustling waterfront town combines history with tourism and a helping of eclectic on top to create the perfect maui adventure.
Lahaina is a location that was experienced by two million people, or approximately 80% percent of all of maui tourism, per year. Lahaina has over a thousand years of rich history, and was the capital of the kingdom of hawaii from 1820 to 1845. From beaches to restaurants, lahaina was one of the top attractions for our island. Lahaina's front street has been ranked one of the "top ten greatest streets" by the american planning association. Visitors and locals alike enjoyed quiet relaxing strolls, as well as breaks and events under the massive banyan tree located in the town square. Lahaina harbor was an attraction in itself.
